Position : HPC Virtual CTO (Chief Technology Officer)

As an HPC Virtual CTO at Qvelo, you will provide strategic technical leadership and vision for clients who rely on advanced high-performance computing (HPC) systems to drive innovation, research, and business-critical operations. Acting as a trusted advisor, you will collaborate closely with client leadership teams to develop and execute long-term HPC strategies, optimize existing infrastructures, and guide the implementation of cutting-edge technologies like AI/ML, quantum computing, and cloud HPC. Your deep expertise in HPC architecture, technology trends, and industry best practices will help clients maximize the value of their HPC investments while ensuring scalability, security, and operational excellence.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the strategic technology advisor for clients, providing leadership on the design, deployment, and optimization of HPC environments.
  • Develop and execute HPC technology roadmaps, aligned with clients’ business goals, future growth, and emerging trends in the industry.
  • Guide clients in making key decisions on HPC architecture, hardware procurement, cloud strategies, and software solutions, ensuring cost-effective and high-performance outcomes.
  • Evaluate new technologies and advancements in HPC, AI/ML, cloud computing, and quantum simulation to help clients stay at the cutting edge of innovation.
  • Lead efforts to optimize existing HPC systems by improving efficiency, scalability, and performance, as well as ensuring systems meet evolving business and research needs.
  • Collaborate with client leadership to assess risks and opportunities in adopting new technologies, helping them make informed decisions about HPC system upgrades or transformations.
  • Ensure that clients’ HPC systems are secure, compliant, and aligned with industry regulations and standards.
  • Provide expert guidance on hybrid and cloud-based HPC strategies, integrating on-premises and cloud infrastructures to create flexible, scalable HPC environments.
  • Foster innovation by advising on AI/ML integrations, data analytics frameworks, and next-generation computing technologies.
  • Lead the development of HPC governance frameworks, ensuring efficient resource management, cost controls, and best practices for system usage.
  • Engage with external stakeholders, including vendors and partners, to ensure clients have access to the latest HPC solutions and support.
  • Mentor internal client teams, providing guidance on technical skills development, best practices in HPC management, and long-term technology planning.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in designing, managing, and scaling HPC systems, with proven experience as a senior technology leader or CTO in a high-performance computing or related field.
  • Deep expertise in HPC architecture, including cluster design, parallel computing, cloud HPC, and performance optimization.
  • Proven experience in developing long-term technology strategies for organizations, aligning HPC infrastructure with business goals.
  • Extensive knowledge of AI/ML workflows, high-performance storage, network infrastructures, and quantum computing technologies.
  • Strong understanding of cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and experience in hybrid HPC environments.
  • Expertise in high-performance interconnects (InfiniBand, Ethernet) and storage solutions (Lustre, GPFS, parallel file systems) for large-scale data processing.
  • Strong business acumen, with the ability to bridge the gap between technical and business goals, and advise C-level executives on critical technology decisions.
  • Proven ability to evaluate emerging technologies and assess their potential to drive innovation within an organization.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, capable of articulating complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and executives.
  • Familiarity with security best practices for HPC systems, including data protection, regulatory compliance, and risk management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in quantum computing technologies, quantum simulation, or next-generation computing platforms.
  • Certifications in cloud platforms (AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect, Google Cloud Architect).
  • Experience in AI/ML integration in HPC environments, including deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch) and GPU-accelerated computing.
  • MBA or advanced business degree is a plus, with experience advising companies on technology investments and ROI.

Security Clearance
Canadian, U.S., or NATO clearance levels are desirable, but not mandatory. Some projects will require applicants to obtain a clearance at Secret-level clearance or higher.
